This one is from The New Yorker magazine and seems like a joke referring to the very prolonged and painful show time (literally) that cricket experienced in England during the 1930s:Ĭricket, I am informed, is so good that we are all going mad for it-but it is not nearly so good as it used to be. There was a joke in the 1920s which went like this: "It's been show time I'm just waiting for the clown." It probably was a reference to clown shows or carnivals but it was commonly used to describe a show that goes on too long or a performance that is much too enjoyable. UCSB's return to the NCAA Tournament is "It's been show time" for the Gauchos. It seems that the term "it's been show time" was used in the past to describe sport events and is still in use today. I also wonder whether this expression is just a sports expression or it can be used with any kind of show. I'm quite sure it wasn't used in the past, but I cannot find any reference to this phrase online.
